Feature Idea: Airbnb Split Payments
Published: 24/09/2025
We all love booking unforgettable group trips on Airbnb; beach houses, mountain cabins, city apartments with just enough beds for everyone. But there’s one part of the experience that hasn’t evolved with the rest of the platform:
Why does one person always have to pay everything upfront and then chase friends for money?
Isn’t it time for Airbnb to introduce a long overdue feature: Split Payments for group bookings?
The Problem: Group Trips, Solo Payers
Right now, booking a group stay usually means:
One person covers the full cost
Everyone else promises to “send it later”
Awkward reminders start flying
Someone inevitably pays late (or forgets)
It turns a fun trip into a mini accounting exercise and sometimes even creates tension before the holiday has begun.
In a world where apps can split restaurant bills instantly and manage shared expenses with ease, Airbnb’s single payer model feels outdated.
The New Feature: Airbnb Split Payments
Imagine this instead: When a user books a property, they can choose Split Payments and:
Select how many people will share the cost
Invite friends directly from their Airbnb contacts
Allocate equal or custom amounts per person
Send automatic payment requests
Each friend receives a notification in the Airbnb app:
“Amy requested $219 from your for an Airbnb stay.”
No bank transfers.
No screenshots.
No chasing.
Just seamless, in-app payments.
A Feature That Matches How We Travel Today
Group travel is more popular than ever with bachelor trips, girls’ weekends, family holidays, work retreats. Yet the payment experience still assumes one person is the “bank”.
Split Payments would modernize Airbnb’s booking flow and remove one of the most common friction points in shared travel planning.
It’s not just a convenience feature, it’s a social one. It reflects how people actually travel: together.
The Big Question
We already split:
Uber rides
Dinner bills
Streaming subscriptions
Event tickets
So why not accommodation?
Isn’t it time Airbnb made group travel as easy to pay for as it is to plan?
Split Payments feels like a feature users have been waiting for quietly, awkwardly, and repeatedly.. every time someone says:
“I’ll book it… just send me your share.”
Maybe that sentence should finally disappear.
